The word moxibustion consists of the japanese words "mog(u)sa" (= dried and small ground fibres from the leaves of wormwood) and "combustio" (= burning). A small amount of mugwort will be burned on or over certain points (like acupressure points), that are on the meridians. During treatment, the therapist will put an inflammed moxa cigar so close to the points, that has to be treated, that patient still feels comfortable (which in practise is about 0.5 to 1 cm). This will be continued till skin is significantly red. According to the traditional chinese medicine (TCM), moxibustion is stimulating the energy flow in the body and is effective against coldness (warming the meridians).
